CATHNET/AUSCATH VISION

This is an initial sharing of some updated old thoughts. It is all just a suggestion, but I would like to see it come to some kind of fruition and I will do my bit.

SERVERS

We have 2 servers setup (linode.com) currently one houses our websites, cathnet.org, auscath.info (which has many miniportal websites) and opencatechesis.org. There are 2.0.4 instance (turned off), 2.1 (auscath.info to be upgraded to 2.5) and 2.5 (cathnet.org and opencatechesis.org)

The other server is new and has no websites on it at present.

My suggestion is to have important websites on one and have a common public development box on the other with many custom scripts to test products etc. and to allow developers to work together. This will allow developers to be given access and try things, while only trusted developers will be allowed on the production server.

MINIPORTAL/SUBPLONE/DEOWEB

MEGACATHOLIC SERVER

Create a World Plone Catholic Server (DEOWEB?) as the bottom level of a common amateur/professional shared Catholic Website Server. This will allow auscath.info to be one level up (representing Australia) and for other branches to be created, USCath?.info? NZCath?.info? etc

Cathnet.org members can create sites as they please. Anyone can sell sites as they like. Anyone can create their own site. The system would rely upon donations. and any commercial sites would give 10% to cathnet.org to help cover server costs etc. This should allow for an interesting 'production sandbox'. So the two servers would work together. All new products would need to be fully tested on the development box before migration to the production server. This would provide stability for commercial sites. But also allow others to do their bit for development. A lot can be completed TTW.

Anyone can join and create a miniportal. cathnet.org members can link a URL to a auscath.info member site (using TRAC? as communication Ticket system).

This can create a powerful synergy of development between researchers, professionals, amateurs, and Church members.

OBJECT GROUPING ON MEGA SERVER

a. Objects are grouped into use by creating a new object that only allows particular objects to be added, this simplifies the site and makes the site more manageable, ie with help, and simplicity. i. Homepage: folder, page, blog, photoalbum, etc including the other collections: group, education and all. ii. group: standard plone, newsletter, news, events, mailboxer, etc iii. education: lecture, sharebook, etc iv. all: all possibilities.

MEMBERSHIP

1. Members must agree to the terms and conditions of the site on joining. Their member folder will be a Homepage folder. They have total control of it, but they will be deleted if a concern is raised. Part of the terms and conditions is that all member content including private can be reviewed by the site administrators.

COPYRIGHT

We take copyright seriously and are upfront about all the copyright issues.

1. any object added has, by default, the owner

maintaining full copyright of the object, but allows cathnet, non-exclusive digital rights over the object.

2. integrate the creative commons licence product.

5. public parts of the site

   1. a person's own homepage is a public part of the

site.

2. the site has particular sections for various group

types, eg diocese, national organisations, etc,

3. any object can be submitted to a group for

incorporation. The group will have it's own review process and reviewer (by default the owner) and once it is incorporated, the group will have non-exclusive digital and print rights to the object submitted. It will be copied into the group. The group (owner or managers) will then have control of the resource and no longer the original owner. The original owner can submit changes if they wish. Each change will be reviewed.

4. These are the default settings for copyright and

review which of course can change and be modified. eg opencatechesis will have creative commons licence and so part of the process of submitting is to accept the resource will be creative commons licenced.

6. Vision

   1. as an organisation, we provide a service to

individuals and groups.

2. The managing of national and diocesan group areas,

including group inclusion is the role of cathnet administrators. The administrator role is as follows

1. oversee the look and feel of that part of the

site.

2. review groups on that part of the site
3. set up reviewers and other roles on that part

of the site.

4. Create a front page with chosen, news, events,

vision, etc.

3. The public areas with particular roles

   1. each state, diocese/ city, eg sydney should have

one central section, rather than based on each diocese

2. National groups
3. Particular interest groups, eg homeschoolers,

youth, teachers, academics, for these we would offer to the major groups to take on their particular roles on the site, eg scta, acsa, australian academics, etc.

7. evangelisation.

   1. individuals and groups can create cards with

particular links to auscath sections, eg individual: testimony and homepage.

2. auscath.info homepage is changed into an

evangelisation portal with sections having

1. news (zenit? cathnews?)
2. testimonies (random selection)
3. groups (enter your location and find out about

groups in your area.)

4. discussion board (site wide) with a particular

section for 'newbies' and a selection of these listed on the frontpage.

   1. who will be keeping on eye on the site 24/7?

   2. who will fund the site?

      1. We rely on donations and ask for (but don't

expect) a certain charge for using the site.
